SUZHOU

Suzhou has a recorded history of more than 4,000 years and is one of the 24 famous Chinese historical and cultural cities in the first batch. First built in 514 B.C., the city of Suzhou enjoys a history of over 2,500 years since then. The city is still located at the site where it was back to the Spring and Autumn Period, substantially maintaining its double-chessboard pattern of “water and road going in parallel, river and street moving as neighbors”, its water course system of “three vertical lines, three horizontal lines and one circle” and its unique style of “small bridges, flowing rivers, pink walls and black & blue tiles, historic sites and famous gardens”.

Traditionally known as the “Heaven on Earth”, the city of Suzhou enjoys more than 2,500 years of historical and cultural development. Suzhou, located in the Yangtze River Delta and the southeast of Jiangsu Province, is a super-large city in East China and also one of the major sub-central cities in the economic circle of the Yangtze River Delta. As a highly modernized city, Suzhou is Jiangsu Province’s important economic, foreign trade, business, cultural, arts and educational center as well as important transportation hub.

Suzhou develops most rapidly in China. As an economically developed city, Suzhou is one of the major economic centers in the economic circle of the Yangtze River Delta and the industrial center of the south region of Jiangsu Province. Suzhou enjoys very convenient transportation with Suzhou Port, which is the largest inland river port in China and even in Asia, the largest port in Jiangsu and the ninth largest port in Mainland China, as well as railway and highway networks reaching various big cities in China. In terms of GDP, Suzhou realized a GDP of RMB 173.8 billion in 2012, ranking the fifth in Mainland China. Its per capita GDP, calculated according to its permanent residents in 2010 reached RMB 102,400, making Suzhou one of the Chinese cities with the highest per capita GDP. Suzhou has jurisdiction over Zhangjiagang City, Changshu City, Kunshan City, Wujiang District, Wuzhong District, Xiangcheng District, Gusu District, Suzhou Industrial Park and Suzhou Hi-New District (Huqiu District). With a total area of 8,488.42 square kilometers, Suzhou has a urban area of 2,743 square kilometers. In 1993, Suzhou was accredited by the State Council as a “Relatively Large City”.
